How to Handle Hot Issues with Web Design and Development Clients

In the world of web development and design, you will deal with many different clients on many different levels. Sometimes, these clients are a dream and everything goes incredibly smoothly from start to finish. Other times, though, it may seem like you butt heads with your clients almost daily. How do you deal with difficult clients? Here are some tips and tricks for handling hot issues with web design and development clients.

Client #1 – The Negotiator

The problem: Unfortunately, no matter how long you work in the web design business and how fair you set your prices, there will always be clients who want you to work for beans. In fact, you may even notice that some of your clients seem more interested in getting the lowest price possible than discussing their wishes with you.

The solution: One of the best ways to deal with this type of client involves using a solid project management system. This way, you can track your hours. Another method involves negotiating right back. If your client wants to save $200 on your usual price, for example, explain that she will need to provide her own images and upload her own content.

Client #2 – The Second Opinion Guy

The problem: Sometimes, you will find clients who always need a second opinion, whether the VP of a company has to run everything by the President, or an entrepreneur constantly wants his wife’s opinion. In return, it seems like it takes you forever to get anywhere in the web development process.

The solution: You really cannot do much when your client must get a second opinion from someone else. In fact, chances are good that your client is just as annoyed as you are. One thing you can do to help speed up the web design process involves presenting two or three different options for each scenario up front. This way, your client can run all of the ideas past his partner or superior at once, giving you more time to focus on the job at hand.

Client #3 – Miss “I Need It Yesterday”

The problem: She does not understand that you have other clients, and even if she does, it does not seem like she cares. She orders from you regularly, but she expects you to churn out entire projects with an inhuman quickness. In fact, she may even offer to pay you a bonus if you prioritize her work, which is tempting for those in the web development business.

The solution: If she pays well, keep her on the books – but do not take on any more clients like her. Try to judge the amount of work she will give you, and make room in your schedule for it when possible. Set realistic expectations with her at the onset of the project, too. If she badgers you, do your best to be gentle and firm at the same time. Remind her that rushed work is not high-quality work, and she will usually back down.

In the web design industry, you will come across all types of different clients. However, knowing how to handle them not only saves your sanity and allows you to create the best websites possible, but also helps your reputation and guarantees repeat business.
